Free-Motion Quilting

Posted By Margaret on March 9, 2010

I just taught a fun class Saturday on Machine Quilting.  There was a wide range of experience in class from total beginners to some who had already been free-motion quilting and just wanted to improve their skills.  This is a great class to get over your fear of free-motion quilting.  We do almost everything without marking…it’s all free-form and therefore much easier than it looks.  Also the class is filled with tips on machine quilting like:

  • To move fabric easier under the needle, use two squares of non-slip shelf liner under your hands.
  • To close basting safety pins more easily, untape basted quilt from the table first.
  • Or use a grapefruit spoon to close safety pins while still taped to the table.
  • For easy to remove straight line marking, use masking tape.

Check out the video posted here.  If you’d like to learn to do this too, I have another Machine Quilting class coming up on Friday, May 7, 10am – 3pm at the Scarlet Thread.
