Handmade Holiday Retreat

This year’s Handmade Holiday Retreat at my studio #307 in the Hungerford Building (located at 1115 East Main Street in Rochester, N.Y.) will be October 27 -29, Friday through Sunday. Join other makers and create 6 separate hand-made items, all perfect for holiday gift giving. The projects will highlight some of the newest fabrics available and you will learn special tips for working with them. The setting at my studio is a little more intimate than at a fabric store, so class size is limited. But my studio offers large tables with ergonomic and adjustable chairs, cutting stations and ironing boards with irons. If you are planning to attend, don’t delay registering or you may end up on a waiting list.

So here’s the lineup:
Friday, October 27, 6 – 9 p.m. We will meet and set up your individual maker’s station for the weekend while enjoying some hors d’oeuvres and punch (recipes included). Then we will make an easy and quick project, a quilted artwork frame. The pattern will be included and can be adapted to larger sizes if later you want to make more. Learn how to attach a mitered border from a striped fabric to make this fun quilted fabric frame for a photo transferred onto fabric, a cross-stitch or embroidered square or a fun novelty fabric print. You can leave your machine and supplies set up over the entire weekend.

Saturday, October 28, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Return Saturday morning for coffee, tea and a continental breakfast before starting our morning project: a “leather” tech stand to prop up that tablet or cell phone. Learn special techniques for working with a new leather-like paper product that is washable and can be sewn. This fun fabric is called Kraft-Tex and I sell it at my studio. Then we will break for a box lunch. After lunch we will resume sewing and make a Ready-to-Travel Backgammon board also made with Kraft-Tex. This makes a great child or even adult gift and it rolls up for travel. Also receive a bonus pattern for a “leather” & ribbon key fob to make from your scraps of Kraft-Tex. All patterns for these projects are available in the book “Kraft-Tex Style” also available for purchase at my studio.

Sunday, October 29, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday morning we will begin with coffee and tea followed by a hot Sunday brunch. We will spend Sunday making two fabric projects. The first project will be a Zippy Strippy zippered bag from a Terry Atkinson pattern. The pattern is made from 2 1/2″ strips and can be embellished with rick rack or buttons. The second project, also a Terry Atkinson pattern, is a Fat Sack, perfect for carrying groceries but would also make a great reusable gift bag.

I will have several colors of Kraft-Tex available for purchase at my studio as well as the hardware needed for all projects, patterns, books and lots of contemporary 100% cotton fabrics by-the-yard.

By the end of the weekend, you will have 6 gift items and new knowledge and techniques for working with various fabrics. Your handmade projects will look totally professional and be worthy of gift-giving. All this, including some patterns and meals for just $99. Can’t beat that! Let the maker in you out create some one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. Happy Holidays and I hope you can join us. ¬†Click here to download a Handmade Holiday Retreat Sign-up Brochure.
