Fast & Fabulous Fridays Are Back

Posted By on August 26, 2011

This fall we’ll be continuing the Fast & Fabulous Fridays at Jackie Lynn’s and starting them at the Scarlet Thread too.   I chose different quick and easy patterns for each store so you could take both series if you like.  The idea behind this series of classes is to spend one Friday a month making a fast and fabulous quilt.  All of the patterns sew up in a hurry, and often you will get the top done by the end of class, if you come to class with everything cut out ahead of time.  The class includes lunch, so you can sew uninterrupted for the whole day, sort of a mini-retreat day class.

This fall at Jackie Lynn’s we’ll be “stripping” at the Fast & Fabulous Fridays.  All of the patterns I chose are made from 2 1/2″ strips.  You can either buy pre-cut and coordinated jelly rolls, or cut your own 2 1/2″ strips from your scraps.  The “Strip in the Box” pattern we’ll be making in September includes a bonus quilt to make from the pieces you cut away from your main quilt.  I made a smaller version of the pattern so my bonus quilt was wall-hanging size.  In October we’ll be making the “Strip Stacks” pattern which is pulled together with a contrasting background fabric.  November’s pattern “Strip Squares” is made up of courthouse square blocks.  The varying value in strips is what makes the squares the appear to be different sizes and some of the squares appear to pop off the quilt towards you.

In case you haven’t heard yet, the Scarlet Thread has a new location.  It’s real easy to get to, just north off of Route 104, at the Route 250 exit.  Take 250 north and turn right just before Hank’s Ice Cream on Donovan Street.  The store is just a short distance down on the right at 85 Donovan Street (next to the sub shop).  The new store is nice and bright and has plenty of parking.  You no longer will have to parallel park on Main Street.

At the Scarlet Thread in October we will be making the “Urban Cabin” pattern.  It’s a contemporary version of the more traditional half log cabin starting with a rectangle instead of a square.  I used all batiks in colors that reminded me of the Caribbean.  This quilt also uses 2 1/2″ strips, with a more scrappy option of piecing the rectangle.  In November, we’ll be making the Terry Atkinson pattern “Pie Crust Pileup.”  I chose grape themed fabrics for my pie crusts.  It’s another “strip” quilt made from 2 1/2″ strips, this pattern also has a skinny strip option.  And in December we’ll be making one of the ever popular and fast, fast, fast BQ quilts…BQ2.  This is my favorite of all of the BQ patterns and I’ve made it many times.  Just 6 blocks gives you a large-sized baby or child-sized quilt.  There is no need for a border, making it sew up so fast you won’t believe it.  You’d probably have time to make two quilt tops during class since this quilt sews up so fast.

The Fast & Fabulous Friday series is only $40 per month and includes your lunch.  But if you sign up for all three months  at one store, you’ll get the classes for $30 per month.  And if you’re really ambitious and want to make quilts for holiday gifts, why not sign up for the whole series at both stores!  Get your cutting done before class, and then join us for a fun filled day of quilting.
